MY TEACHING EXPERIENCE
My Observations
The
diversity of learning styles and intelligences among students is one of my most
significant discoveries about the teaching and educational scene. Although
there should not be a one-size-fits-all curriculum or teaching approach for
every student, a pre-service teacher in the 21st century must be
able to adapt to the changing educational landscape and use comprehensive,
constantly evolving, flexible teaching methods that can guide students toward
their greatest learning experiences. I've seen that classrooms need to become a
good training ground before they can shape students into globally capable
individuals, and CMULHS is excellent at this.
On my first day of
teaching in an actual classroom environment. I feel so nervous at the same time
excited to meet my students, I feel so nervous because I always think that what
if I can’t meet the expectation of my Cooperating teacher and my student, what
if I can’t deliver my lesson well. But, despite of that I still do my best to
teach them. I just follow my lesson plan although there are some parts of the
lesson plan I forgot to deliver. I’ve observed that the students were actually
very friendly and has a genuine curiosity towards the lesson, they have
impressive prior knowledge of the topics beforehand, and they always give me
additional comments about specific components of the lesson, which I
unfortunately sometimes overlook. As a teacher we should have to guide
students’ pathway to success and expand their learning, perspective, and wisdom
beyond the walls of the school’s campus. It was a reluctance that I need to
erase because the school is about the student’s learning, not the teacher’s
perfect technique of delivering the contents of the subjects supplied for them.
As
I start teaching, I realized all those things that I need to develop my
communication skills, expounding my knowledge in the subject matter, my
self-confidence, and my body language. As the process of my internship, I am
doing my best to develop all those things. As I was assigned in the Grade 7
Diamond which is the first section the students there are knowledgeable, they
can understand verry well. I feel that it is a challenge for me to be assigned
in the first section to know what strategies and techniques I will apply so
that my students can learn something from me. They are an active and
participative student which all those tasks you will give to them they will
accomplish it willingly.
My participation during my in-campus Teaching Experiences
As a member of the Bachelor of Physical
Education, there’s an unspoken perception that the majority of BPED PSTs need
to be constantly engaged and active. In addition to having sharp, capable
minds, CMULHS is full of people with strong physical abilities. That’s why
during our early days, faculties and superior authorities of the school have
devised a schedule dedicated exclusively for physical activities. On Mondays,
Wednesdays, and Fridays, we were tasked to have sports conditioning exercises
and train the students on their respective or preferred sports. The sports that
we are assigned first we are assigned at pickle ball but unfortunately there’s
no student attending in the pickle ball that’s why we assigned in the
volleyball the first step is when doing our conditioning activity is, we need
to do the warm up first that is fit in the sport, next we let the student play
with our co-PST and then we observed to the students for those who need to improve
their playing style and what are the strategies they need to develop. On the
other days, during Tuesdays and Thursdays, all BPED PSTs are mandated to join
the dance exercise activity for 20 minutes along with the faculties and
individuals who wanted to join the said activity. The balance between work and
play is vital in the school’s philosophy.
However, one of my most memorable participations
in my in-campus experience was during the school’s annual P.E Day celebration. With
my fellow PSTs assigned to the same section, we were also commanded to help
carve the students’ presentation to its highest refinement. The battle of the
best presentations was loud and prominent during that time. Our section got the
second place I know they did their best and 2nd place is not bad for
the important is the experience and the enjoyment they feel in that day.
On the
other side, our final requirement is making the Table of Specification,
Periodical examination in MAPEH, and the Item Analysis. It is hard for us
because it is our first time to make it. There are many errors and mistakes
that we need to do it again repeatedly until we get the correct one. In the
examination time we are assigned to be a proctor in the Grade 8 Capricorn for
the Filipino subject it is an opportunity for us to experience this proctorship
to know what the things are you need to do if you are the proctor. While
waiting the exam to finish after the three days scheduled, we are given a
tasked to carefully tallied the scores of each student down from their quizzes,
activities, then their final exam raw scores, after all that, we were tasked
again to calculate the final grades of each student from every respective
section of the Grade 7 level. After the exam then we focused in checking the
papers of the students through zip grade then after that we do the item
analysis which we need to be careful on doing all the steps because one mistake
you do then you need to do it again. We also do the color coding of the items
of the exam based on the result of the item analysis. Overall, it is a
challenging experience, and we got a new knowledge and experience which we will surely
use in the future.
Teaching Activities
During my in-campus teaching experience, I was
assigned to teach the subject MAPEH at the Grade 7 level. At first, I was happy
and relieved because the subject aligns with my bachelor’s program. Me,
alongside with a couple of fellow PSTs, were assigned to the same Cooperating
teacher named Mrs. Angeline T. Limocon EdD. She handles MAPEH subjects for both
grade 7 and grade 10 levels. I, alongside with two BPED PSTs, was assigned to
teach MAPEH for the considered top section of Grade 7, section Grade 7 –
Diamond when I learned that it is the first section, I feel nervous and scared
because there’s many what if that pop up in my mind such as what if they I
can’t deliver my lesson well. The protocol for teaching is that we were given
allotted time for accomplishing 1 hour of teaching for each PST assigned on
that section. Which, in our case, the regular MAPEH subject schedule on that
section is 1 hour and 30 minutes. Therefore, we the PSTs should strategically
divide our hours accordingly so not to jeopardize our schedules and target our
complete time allotment individually. Which is every week each of us need to
teach 1 hour for a one topic. As we start teaching, we do some strategies to
manage our class and also, we do motivational games to get the attentions of
the students and make them lively in the class.
First Day (First Week)
For my first day, I was assigned to handle the
first hour of teaching MAPEH 7. The topic I’m going to teach them was “Dwelling
Design of Luzon”. I was nervous and because of that I didn’t deliver well
my lesson. There are many comments that my give to me in my first day of
teaching. I didn’t do the preliminaries anymore because my co-PST do it already,
my classroom management is present, but it needs improvement, for my teaching
activities, I conducted a short game called “Jumbled Words” wherein the
students need to arrange the jumbled words. The game went well, and students
are actively engaged in the gamification strategies that I’ve imposed.
Furthermore, since it's my first time managing an actual classroom environment,
I do the Socratic questioning, but also there are parts of the lesson plan that
I forgot to mention in my class. In my first day there are many realizations
that I discover that I need to develop by the help of my Cooperating Teacher
from her comments
Cooperating Teacher’s Feedback
Second Day (Second Week)
For my second day, I was tasked to teach the topic
“The Arts and Craft of MIMAROPA and Visayas”. This week was a bit different
because I was handling the 1st hour of this week. The teaching
activities I’ve incorporated during these sessions were a short gamification
activity. It was named “Picture Puzzled” wherein it is a group activity
and students need to reassemble the picture within 2 minutes and if they are
done, they need to do the Mommy Dionisia Applause. After that, I’ve conducted a
thorough oral recitation session where I will show only the picture of our
topic and they need to discuss or give their ideas about the picture. The
session will end with a short quiz afterwards. The students were actively
engaged and more well-behaved this second teaching experience. Usually because
I know now how I can easily get their attention and energy, that’s utilizing
game-based exercises.
Cooperating teacher’s Feedback
Third Day (Third Week)
On my third day of teaching, I was now assigned
back to handle the first hour of teaching. The topic I discussed for the
students was “Dwelling Design of Mindanao” I did my best to deliver my
lesson well. This I didn’t get any feedback from my Cooperating teacher because
she was not able to attend my class because of the P.E Day we are not able to
conduct our class on the scheduled date so we are task to ask the students if
we can get or have their vacant time to conduct our make-up class. The time they have given to us was 3:30 to 4:30 pm and our CT has a meeting that time that’s
why she is not able to attend or observe in my class. In my teaching activities,
I incorporated the game “Pic Two Words”, the instructions where the
students will guess the words or phrase base on the two picture that represent
it. They need to combine the two pictures to form a word or phrase. Moreover, I
also focused more on Socratic questioning because it’s a topic open for
multiple personal interpretations of experiences. After that, a short quiz was
given to the students. Through this method, I can easily tell who’s paying
attention with conviction and focus and who’s not.
My assessment on this particular session is to
let the students make an origami house and they need to paste it in the cardboard and also put any design to make it look colorful.
Fourth Day (Fourth Week)
On my Fourth and final day of teaching, I was
now assigned back to handle the third hour of teaching. The topic I discussed
for the students was “Celebration of Philippine Festivals”. I
incorporated the game “Jumbled Letters”, the instructions where the
students will form the jumbled letters to form a word. They need to combine the
two pictures to form a word or phrase. Then we had our final quiz for
our last topic of the chapter. I’m just the one to deliver my topic for that
week because, February 25 was holiday that’s why my co-PST can’t discuss their
topic, our CT just command them to send their Power point to the Group chat of
the student so that they can study and in the next they will have a quiz. It is
my final teaching, but I know I have still a room for improvement and I’m still
working for it.
Cooperating teacher’s Feedback
Minor Subject Teaching Activities
During my in-campus teaching experiences, I was
thankful to say that I get to teach Values Education and still I was assigned
in the Grade 7 Diamond, and we were assigned there by pair to do a team teaching
in a lesson. A subject not only crucial
for the development of not only efficient citizens of the country but
respectful, kind, and someone who values genuine empathy for other people. My
cooperating teacher for this subject was Ms. Shykie B. Olanga, she gives us a
genuine and specific feedback to improve our performance to the next level, a
level where our limitations are non-existent. The teaching activities we’ve
incorporated where gamification heavy exercises because the topics assigned to
us was all about “Growth in friendship”, therefore, we’ve decided to take
advantage of the notion and turn the classroom instructions as engaging as
possible. The activities we’ve injected were “Agree or Disagree”, it’s a
game where we extract student’s opinions on various claims pertaining to
friendships such as loyalty, non-judgmental and honesty. The second game we’ve
played was called “Sorting Hat Friendship Rotation”, it’s a game wherein
the students form a circle and while the music will play, students march in a
circular formation while passing the ball besides each other and at the same
time an arrow is rotating on an opposite direction, whoever holds the ball when
the music stops and the one being pointed at by the arrow will come to the
center and will be asked different questions that might reveal something about
each other’s friendships. It’s a very successful implementation of gamification
strategies that might help students’ sensory learning being much more
developed. Her feedback was mostly positive and straightforward but the only
thing lacking for us is that we don’t elaborate more on specific qualities of
growing with friendship, she’s seeking for personal stories from students which
we failed to do so. It was a shame, but it served as a monumental learning tip
for us. The skill to interconnect any venues of learning towards the student’s
individual journey of their lives.
Reflection
Through it all, I would say my in-campus
internship was a challenging because the students there are intelligent, and I
should do all the possible teaching strategies and styles so that my students
can learn something from me. I can also say that it is successful because
through ups and down still I finished my journey there and I didn’t surrender.
All the trials that I have been encounter the fear, judgement, limits were all
meticulously tested especially during my earlier days on the campus. It’s been
a hectic ride, the sleepless nights to construct a lesson plan, do the power
point presentation the fears of judgement towards people who I thought was more
superior than me, the impending fear of failure because you missed to hit that one
objective or the expectation of your Cooperating Teacher and your students. Overall,
I’m happy that I survive my in-campus journey I will keep those learnings and
experiences I’ve encounter there as a lesson that I know I can apply in the
near future.
